Is among of the beautiful volcanoes and it’s the second highest mountain in Tanzania and fifth highest in Africa. This amaizing 4556m High Mountain is just 30 km from Arusha town and it’s within Arusha National Park.Meru summit is called Socialist peak. 

While Meru climb there is opportunity to spot animals as well as birds, due to presence of animals an armed ranger is needed while climb. The early parts of the trail passes through lush rain forest of fig trees and Colubus monkeys can be spoted. 

Meru climbing route is very steep but one can climb in four days and those who are fit they could hike just for 3 days.

Day 1. Arusha -Momella gate (1500m) -Mirihakamba hut (2500m)

Leave  Arusha hotel/ Outpost lodge/Coffee house/Arumeru lodge in the morning after breakfast drive to Momella gate within Arusha National Park. At Momella gate you will be introduced to guide, chef, porters and an armed ranger.

You will start climbing after introduction and you will walk through wild animals like Zebras, cape buffalos, antelopes, elephants, monkeys as well as different species of birds. Due to present of wild animals an armed ranger would join you all the way during your climb for safety reasons.

Dinner and overnight at Mirihakamba hut.

Walking time 5-7 hours. 

Day 2. Mirihakamba hut (2500m) -Saddle hut (3500m)

Leave Mirihakamba hut for Saddle hut, a walk from Mirihakamba hut to Saddle hut below little Meru is a short day but steep climb. A walk will take you slowly along the ridge for a spectacular view of Meru crater and the impressive Ash cone.

After lunch at Saddle hut you can make a short climb to the summit of little Meru (3820m) for superb view point.

Dinner and overnight at Saddle hut.

Day 3. Saddle hut-Socialist summit (4350m)-Saddle hut-Momella gate

Start early around 1.30 am to climb steeply through Rhino point (3800m) and then on to Cobra point (4566m). You will reach the socialist summit (4566m) early in the morning, while at socialist summit there is possibility to see Kilimanjaro peak above the clouds.

After that you will walk back to Saddle for a rest and meal then continue to Mommela gate. Transfer car will be waiting for you at Momella gate ready to pick you up to drive back to Arusha for dinner and overnight.

Walking time. 12-14 hours.

Dinner and overnight in Arusha

Day 1. Arusha -Momella gate (1500m) -Mirihakamba hut (2500m)

Day 2. Mirihakamba hut-Saddle hut (3550m)

Leave Mirihakamba hut for saddle hut after breakfast, will be a short day climb but steep. Due to the high attitude it will be cooler on this day compare to the first day and that makes climb easier.

Once you reach Saddle hut you may do short climb to the summit of little Meru (3820m) for a superb view point.

Day 3. Saddle hut-Socialist Summit (4562m)-Mirihakamba hut (2500m)

Start early around 1.30 am climb to Rhino point (3827m) then to Cobra point (4350m) you will reach socialist summit (4562m) early in the morning. Once in summit you may have a possibility to see Kilimanjaro peak above the clouds.

After summit you will start your way back and you will do a break at Saddle hut where you will have your meal. After a break you will continue your way down to Mirihakamba hut.

Walking hours 10-14 hours 

Day 4. Start in the morning at Mirihakamba hut walk down to Momella gate, where a transfer car will be waiting for you for your way back to Arusha.
